Is my dog happy? Read the mood from a photo
A dog's face says a lot: soft eyes, a loose mouth, a hard stare. Bokedex reads one photo of your dog's face, names the mood it sees and suggests one thing to do.
How it works
Three steps.
-
Photograph the face
A clear, well-lit photo where you can see the eyes and mouth.
-
See the mood
Happy, relaxed, tense or low, with a percentage and what it usually means.
-
Do one thing
Each mood comes with a single suggestion, from “a good moment to train” to “give space”.
The moods
- Happy
-
Soft eyes and a loose, open face.
A good moment to play or train.
- Relaxed
-
Calm and comfortable.
Let them rest. Quiet time suits this mood.
- Tense
-
May be stressed or warning: a stiff face or a hard stare.
Give space and don't reach toward the face.
- Low
-
Looks flat or withdrawn.
Watch appetite and energy. If it lasts, ask your vet.
- Hard to tell
-
The face didn't show one mood clearly.
Try a clear, well-lit photo of the face.
What to look at yourself
A photo catches one moment. These are the signs worth checking in person:
- Eyes: soft and blinking, or hard and fixed. Showing the whites of the eyes often means discomfort.
- Mouth: loose and open, or closed tight. Lip licking and yawning outside of tiredness can signal stress.
- Ears: relaxed, pinned back, or pricked hard forward.
- Body: loose and wiggly, or stiff and still, with weight shifted back or forward.
- Tail: height and speed both matter. A wagging tail is not always a happy dog.
When one photo isn't enough
Moods change in seconds, and a camera flash or an odd angle can make a relaxed dog look tense. Use the read as a prompt to look closer, together with what just happened and how your dog is moving.
If you see tense or low again and again, especially with less appetite, less play or a change in sleep, it's worth a vet visit. Pain often looks like a bad mood.
What it can't do. Mood reads look at the face only. They can't see body posture, sounds or what happened a moment before, and they are not a health check.
Questions
Mood: common questions
Can an app tell if my dog is happy?
It can read common facial signs from a clear photo and give a reasonable hint. Your own look at the whole dog, in the moment, is still the better judge.
Why do I get “Hard to tell”?
The face was too dark, blurry, turned away or partly hidden. Try again with the eyes and mouth in clear view.
Does it work for every breed?
Most breeds work well. Faces with a lot of fur over the eyes, or very dark faces in low light, are harder.
Are photos uploaded?
No. The mood read runs on your iPhone.
