The mat should predict good things
Before asking for duration, teach the dog that stepping onto the mat is valuable. Mark any purposeful look, step, paw touch, or lie-down on the surface, then deliver rewards on the mat.
Bokedex place support can help with narrow hold practice. It should be read as one piece of coaching support, not total judgment of the dog's learning.
Early steps
- Place the mat in a quiet area.
- Reward looking at it, stepping on it, or lying on it.
- Feed on the mat, not away from it.
- Release before the dog wanders off.
- Reset by moving the dog off the mat, then let them choose to return.
- Add duration only after the mat has clear value.
Build the behavior in layers
Layer one is mat value. Layer two is going to the mat. Layer three is settling. Layer four is staying until release. Layer five is using the mat near real-life distractions.
If you skip the early layers, place can turn into a forced station. The dog may go there, but they will not necessarily feel settled or able to learn.
Use it in real life
- Near meals, start with the mat far enough from food movement.
- Near doors, keep the door boring and the leash or gate in place.
- With visitors, start before the guest enters the room.
- During work calls, reward quiet returns before barking begins.
- In new rooms, lower duration and reward more often.
Common mistakes
- Using the mat as punishment after the dog has already struggled.
- Adding stay, distance, and visitors before the dog likes the mat.
- Rewarding off the mat and accidentally pulling the dog away.
- Expecting one mat session to transfer to every room.
- Ignoring stress signals because the dog is technically on the mat.
When to pause
Pause if the dog avoids the mat, cannot eat there, pops off repeatedly, or becomes worried when released. Make the mat easier, move it to a calmer space, or return to rewarding simple interaction.
If place work is being used for fear, guarding, or reactivity around people or animals, involve a qualified behavior professional.
